Save the date for the first big guitar event this fall: The Seville Guitar Festival in its sixth edition this year. Judging from the long list of amazing performers that will grace the festival this year, it is evident that the organizer´s goal is to position this event at the very top of the national and international scene. The festival will take place between Wednesday, October 14 and Saturday, the 24th of the same month.
The mainstay of the founder and artistic director of the festival Francisco Bernier, is the diffusion of newly composed music for the guitar and support for young interpreters of the instrument from all nations. For this purpose, the festival encompasses the VI Seville International Guitar Competition which is open for participation to all those born after October 12, 1978.
The winners will receive cash prizes in the amounts of 2000, 1500 and 500 Euros as along with diplomas, guitar strings and CD´s. The first prize includes an international tour during the year of 2016. Florian Larousse, Lazhar Cherouna and Thibaut García from France, the Mexican Alejandro Córdova or Sanja Plohl from Croatia are amongst the former winners of this competition. You can get more information about the competition from here.
Simply put, the list of guitar world personalities invited to the festival is spectacular. From Francisco Bernier himself, Antonio Bonilla, Vicente Carrillo, Alberto García Reyes and Carmen Álvarez hailing from Spain, to the Russian Anton Baranov, Thomas Csaba from France, Zoran Dukic of Croatia or Gustavo Pita of Cuba, are some of the names amongst many others that will participate at this festival.
The festival reserves a very important space for cultural activities and education. There will be numerous master classes imparted by prestigious guitarists as well as conferences and film projections. More information about the master classes and sign up forms can be found here. The deadline for inscription is October 7th. Please keep in mind that the space is very limited, so if you are interested in any of these classes sign up quickly!
The Joaquín Turina auditorium will be the principal venue for the festival. Concerts, film projections, master classes, different preliminary stages of the guitar competition, and two exhibits: the Vicente Carrillo guitars exhibit and a David Pérez Seco poster exhibit will all take place there. The conferences will be given at the Joaquín Turina and Cicus auditoriums. The festival will be inaugurated at the Teatro Central with a round table discussion about the figure of Paco de Lucía and a subsequent screening of the documentary “La Búsqueda” by Curro Sánchez. You can see the full agenda via this link.
All in all, this event continues progressing from year to year with an increasingly varied and attractive agenda. This festival makes October in the majestic city of Seville, more than ever, a month dedicated to guitar and guitarists.
